They were pretty expensive too by manga standards ($19.95), which is the likely cause of their failure. I guess Gutsoon overestimate the recognition of the "Fist of the North Star" brand and thought that American readers would've preferred a colorized translation of the manga instead of a standard black and white one.

I liked the new cover arts by Hara, but didn't care for the Lucasized colorized pages. Perhaps if Gutsoon had done a standard B&W translation, they might had still be around.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8741923639271293979.post-40730718631871998832010-02-12T02:30:10.999-06:002010-02-12T02:30:10.999-06:00What's weird about Fist is that it actually sh...What's weird about Fist is that it actually should have been successful, considering this was the era when Frank Miller was hitting it big, and so it should have catered so the same audience. So my opinion of why the manga didn't do well is that the Miller stuff was popular because of how it focused on gangsters. And since there were few guns in Fist, there was no chance of it catching on as easily. Well, that, and the whole kung fu genre was played out here by the time we got to Bloodsport. [I blame Gymkata myself.] Mortal Kombat sort of resurrected potential interest in Fist, but by then, people wanted shitty 90s comics, like Supes with a mullet, so there was no chance for Ken. ;-; The Gutsoon thing, though, was a missed opportunity, because they could have co-promoted the manga with the episodes of the show Manga released. [They also failed to take advantage of the City Hunter anime and the Jackie Chan movie version being released here, even though a big chunk of people at the Hojo panel @ BAAF '03 were familiar with the latter.]

Emilio: If I recall, the Master Editions were out-sourced to an HK company. My only complaint about 'em was Bat having grey hair.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8741923639271293979.post-69976851209158897642010-02-11T22:19:37.493-06:002010-02-11T22:19:37.493-06:00No, I don't think any heads blew up in that ol...No, I don't think any heads blew up in that old Asian movie. The lone bunkobon I have is probably my favorite piece of hokuto no ken merchandise, and it cost me less than ten bucks.

You're really not missing much in regards to the Raijin releases. They released 9 volumes (which is slightly off from the original Japanese editions because some of the Raijin books only had 8 chapters instead of the usual 9), but the fact that they digitally colored the b&w artwork destroys a lot of what makes Tetsuo Hara so great. Ironically, the covers look awesome, but the pages inside? Not so much.

I checked out a couple of clips of the HnK Korean movie on YouTube. Could he even make people's heads explode in that one?Emiliohttp://blogofthenorthstar.com/noreply@blogger.com
