I know you haven't posted anything in a long while, but I hope you are well and that you see this message. As one of about three Hokuto No Ken fans in Indianapolis (if not all of Indiana) in the mid to late 1980's, this guide book was a must have (I still have mine and as a matter of fact, it's in a three ring binder sitting next to me as I type this.) and on behalf of all three of us, I think you for it's creation. Hope it clears up.

RE: Saint Seiya - I'm exaggerating the popularity, but it certainly seemed overrepresented back in the day mainly because all the gals who were into translating and learning Japanese were into the show. I mean REALLY into the show, if you know what I mean. That whole artwork/bishonen thing again.

RE: Lupin. Lupin had a big advantage starting out due to the Cogliostro film having been subtitled. I think every early C/FO chapter had a copy of that and it got shown a LOT in the early '80s. Of course, it helps that it's a great film. And the "Cliffhanger" videogame (using footage from "Mamo" and "Cogliostro") was in arcades everywhere as well. But after that, the Lupin well got dry really quickly because there simply was not any more accessable material available to rope in new fans. We showed TV episodes (mainly the Miyazaki ones) at meetings, but the later films were difficult to sell to newer fans.

RE: Buronson. It's not surprising to me to find he forgot parts of those latter stories. If I were him, I'd probably try and forget them too.

Seriously, I sometimes wonder exactly how much input he had into the HnK2 and later manga stories. Could this be one of those times when they kept his name on the strip out of custom and Hara or the editors were actually more responsible for them? I dunno, I'm not all that familar with the way the industry is run in the larger manga, but few of Hara's other works were popular enough to sustain long runs IIRC.

That said, I really wish I could remember where I put those Cyber Blue manga collections. The story sucked, but his art really ROCKED during that period.

RWG (there were two spreads in particular that I can still picture to this day)RWGhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07878867424268622656noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8741923639271293979.post-31831236172622743642010-02-05T07:58:29.698-06:002010-02-05T07:58:29.698-06:00RWG HAIL!

That's one of the things I found so refreshing about manga. You tell a good story and adjust stuff as needed in order to tell that story. Hell, the producers of LOST learned that one TOO well and it still drives the fans crazy - while I simply sit back and laugh at them. "Hell, you guys think THAT doesn't make any sense? Let me show you this!"

As for Shin and Ken, all I can say is that we need to be patient. So long as Horie, Hara and the guys at Coamix need filler for Comic Bunch, I'm sure we'll get it sooner or later. Whether it'll make sense and actually LOOK something like Hokuto no Ken, is another question altogether...

Check the link in my reply to Emilio for more information...

I like showing newbies the Shu/"Sauzer" arc because it's more or less self-contained and fairly short, especially compared to the Rei arc. That may still go on to an extent, but the distances between people and the lack of a good communications network that didn't cost a fortune did hurt. People's options for both acquiring anime and information about same were seriously limited and, unfortunately, those who had one or both were sometimes lousy about sharing.

My preferred way of dealing with the feuds and such was with good humor and by doing something as simple as picking up the telephone. It's amazing how quickly walls fall when people actually take the time to reach out and talk to someone. Much of the time, the bad blood was due to simple misunderstandings that could be cleared up with a five-minute phone conversation. Assuming, of course, you were willing to make the effort.

I learned that one during my first two years in the C/FO through a stern letter from Kurt Black. I still have that one and reread it every once in a while...

As for "doing fun stuff," it's mainly a matter of passion. Back then, we had this "us against the world" thing going on and when you're young, that's a pretty good motivator. Not so much when you get older, I think.

In my online searching, I've come across a lot of more recent fans who seem to have that same passion. Particularly these guys:

http://hokutoarmy.wordpress.com/

That's the kind of thing I'd be involved with today if I were still really hungry. Too much of my grandfather in me and I can't resist. Plus, I got tired of picking on Dave...

I know exactly what you mean about the "expert" thing. Of all the stuff that has changed about anime fandom, that's not one of them. I once wrote a article about Catseye because I liked the show and no one else had done anything on it, and for the next few months, I got letters from people asking me questions I simply did not feel qualified to answer. I remember being on the phone with Randal Stuckey for hours listening to the latest bad fan behavior. We were just lucky that we didn't have the internet to post it on for everybody to see. The truth is there were always dicks in fandom. But there were also fans who shared what they loved. And we were better for it. I put in hours and hours retyping synopsis's and pasting up fliers and zines with gluesticks and late nights at Kinkos. And buying blank VHS tapes and standing in line at the Post Office and daisychaining VCRs together and all that stuff. And I don't regret any of it. Even the bad times. I was SIX years old.

It'd be another 8 or 9 years before I'd even see the movie and hate it more than anything, another 12 or so before something inside of me died and I decided it was awesome, another 15 before I'd see all the TV series, and another 20+ before I'd see the whole show in a properly subtitled fashion.

See, contrary to popular belief, I don't know Hokuto no Ken backwards and forwards. In fact, I don't know anything that well at all. But what I have done is at least seen the show, and if there's anything I've learned over the years it's that "if you know a little about something and everyone around you knows nothing at all, that means you're the expert."Daryl Surathttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16164554062892835529noreply@blogger.com
